Never expectorate in the presence of any person. Never expectorate from a car, train, or bus window.
It is indecent to expectorate on the street or in a street car or a bus at any time, but to do so when in the company of another man, woman, or child is unpardonable. Further, to do this without as much as turning the head is inexpressibly nasty. IT IS AN INSULT TO THE PERSON WITH YOU.
If you must relieve yourself, have the decency to go to some secluded spot, watch your opportunity when no one is looking- and remember that someone always is- then indulge to your heart's content.
Again, if you cannot resist the desire to relieve yourself, at least try to do it in such a way that persons passing you do not have their clothing soiled by your filth.
If you use a handkerchief for this vile purpose, do it in the most unobtrusive way and DON'T EXAMINE THE CONTENTS. Quickly dispose of the handkerchief, and at the first opportunity supply yourself with a clean one.
Last, but not least, don't say "Pardon." By neglect to ask forgiveness for your insult, the witnesses will think you so ignorant that instead of condemning you, their hearts will be filled with pity and they will generously deplore your lack of training.
And now may I say "Pardon" for my utter frankness which, by the way, doesn't excuse it.
